The Oak Foundation’s International Human Rights Programme (IHRP) is committed to aligning international human rights law with the everyday realities of people around the world. It offers multi-year core, project, and seed funding to support organizations working in five key areas: justice for victims of international crimes, humane alternatives to detention and elimination of torture, rights and dignity for LGBTQI individuals, a healthy information environment, and strong, resilient human rights movements. In 2024, the programme awarded 50 grants totaling USD 41 million to further these aims.
To pursue justice, the IHRP backs efforts that enhance accountability for international crimes, including collecting evidence and supporting legal proceedings. It challenges the overuse of detention by promoting due process and alternative measures. The programme also works to eliminate discrimination against LGBTQI people through legal advocacy, anti-stigma campaigns, and support services. In the realm of media and information, it funds independent journalism, combats disinformation, and defends digital rights.
A core pillar of the IHRP’s strategy is building strong human rights movements. It supports civil society organizations with resources for advocacy, legal efforts, and capacity development. By fostering collaboration and empowering activists and communities, the programme aims to advance systemic change and protect rights worldwide. The Oak Foundation’s approach reflects a commitment to long-term social justice and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
